The Merced Square is one of the most emblematic places of Malaga. Its located very close to the city center and is the perfect starting point for a route through the historical area. In the center of the square we can see a monument tribute to Torrijos that is the work of Rafael Mitjana and Ardison. The monument is formed by a stone base surrounded by an iron balustrade with lampposts at the corners. On top of this pedestal we can find an obelisk with a laurel wreath.
The history of this place dates back to the 15th century when it was used as a public market and served as a place of leisure and recreation for bourgeois society. Since then the square has undergone different modifications and improvements to become what we see today.
Nearby is the sculpture dedicated to the famous spanish painter and sculptor Pablo Ruíz Picasso. He was born in Málaga, near to this square. Picasso is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. The sculpture in his honor its made in bronze and is the work of Francisco López Hernández. It represents the artist sitting on a bench holding a notebook and a pencil. There are numerous tourists who come every day to sit and make photographs next to the sculpture.
In the surroundings of the square you cand find the Picasso BirthPlace Museum where the artist was born and that collects works of the artist. This museum is dedicated to spreading the history of the painter from Malaga through a documentation center and the organization of different exhibitions and activities. The name of the square in which Picasso took his first steps receives his name from the church and convent that was located in this place the “Iglesia y Convento de Nuestra Señora de la Merced”. It was built in 1507 and after a fire had to be demolished in 1964. Nearby is located the Cervantes Theater a cultural space with a wide program for all tastes.
